![]() In point of fact, at that period in the Battle, the vast majority of surface escorts were Royal or Royal Canadian Navy ships. This may sound like prejudice from a Brit., but every allied escort referred to was, apparently, American. Apparently it has been critically 'acclaimed.' Heaven alone knows who the critics were, but clearly they had little understanding and less knowledge of the Battle of the Atlantic in the latter half of 1942. Very disappointing, especially the naval sections. I am always interested in depictions of military situations and my further comments will probably be limited to those. Most, not all of this amounted to trash in my humble opinion. while we have women characters we are in the 21st century now so it is pretty much obligatory that a lesbian relationship will be depicted. We can have some women characters other than prostitutes. so let's throw in a shoreside story connected to the submarine story in a wildly unlikely way. Now it's a series so they are going to need more material than 1 submarine patrol can offer. so having decided to make a submarine movie it will be as much a horror story as they can make it Without much concern about whether it has any authenticity or not. The television series appeared has a cynical attempt to cash in on the name of movie. these were the sort of people who only want to see the literal truth depicted and of course that truths will be in line with their own memories and impressions. Said that it was complete and utter rubbish, the army was not like that, and Vietnam was not like that. in a bad way.Īctually it has reminded me about what some people said about Platoon. Watching the television series Has made a great impression. ![]() I watch the original movie probably a couple of times now and thought it was pretty good, though not on my top 10 of anything. I've always been a sucker for French Resistance storylines, so on the whole, I'd give this series 5/5 so far. If he was picking up the money for the family's profiteering, couldn't he have just gone to Switzerland and arranged a bank transfer to his bank in America? And were the Americans really going to sink the U-Boat afterward? It didn't really ring true for me, but nice acting by Vincent Kartheiser, (Pete Campbell in Mad Men). The episode I felt a bit puzzled by was the American profiteer, Greenwood, being picked up and dropped off in top secret. They don't yet realise that the Brits have broken the Enigma code and know where to look for them these days. I also like the way they're going all Lord of the Flies on each other because, unlike the beginning of the war, where they were sinking allied ships in their hundreds, suddenly they're losing U-Boats and are beginning to feel vulnerable. I find the sub scenes very claustrophobic and well done in the sense you can just about smell the sweat and toilet and diesel fumes. We're watching on Sky download and enjoying it very much. I'm keen to hear what others think of the show - I hope it comes to your country soon OP! I'm quite enjoying that side of the story but people who only want to see the sub action might get bored with it. I think the acting in the 2018 show is excellent and there are some real tension-filled moments, but there's a lot less focus on the sub, and a lot more about the Resistance and everyday life in La Rochelle under the Germans. There are some nice callbacks to the original movie - the very first scene in the 2018 show is almost a scene-by-scene recreation of the first dive in the movie, including the guy who comes running out of the toilet with his trousers down :-) Also their machinist looks a bit like Johann Das Gespenst, I'd like to think that was a deliberate casting choice! Those who have read the book will recognise some of the incidents in the 2018 show and some of the characters' names. There's a lot more violence in the 2018 show compared to the original movie/miniseries, and the German crew are far less heroic and likeable. Take notice of the menacing, gloomy opening credits, like a horror movie - that pretty much sets the tone for the whole show. One thing I will say about the 2018 show - it's dark and there's a lot of ugliness. If you watch the 2018 show with no expectations that it will be like the original Das Boot, you will enjoy it more. Different story, different focus, different underlying themes, everything. I don't think the 2018 show can be compared to the original movie/miniseries - it's completely different. ![]() I'm halfway thru episode 6.ĮDIT: Now finished all 8 episodes. I'm in Australia and I've been watching it on one of our free-to-air stations where I can stream the whole season.
